Blinkist Review 2020: Is It the Best Book Summary App

Do you always put “read more” into your New Year’s Resolution list? Right up there with “lose weight” and “save money,” “read more” is something that people are always trying to achieve. However, many people too busy to read more and that’s why Blinkist is here.

In this Blinkist review, we will explain what is Blinkist, the pros and cons of Blinkist and who is Blinkist for.

Blinkist

What Is Blinkist?

Blinkist is a book summary service that has one of the largest library of book reviews out there. It is designed for busy individuals who cannot fit as much reading into their everyday life as they would like to. With Blinkist app, you can “read” a book in 15 minutes. Also, you can save time by focusing on the books and topics that interest you, rather than picking up books which you may not like.

Blinkist App

Why Blinkist?

How many books do you want to read every month? And how many books you have read in the past month? If you’re like most people, you probably read only one book a month or less. However, if your goal is to read 3 or more books every month, how can you reach the goal. Blinkist may help you.

Blinkist is for anyone who reads and wants to read fast instead of going through the whole book. Blinkist app offers easy-to-digest versions of popular books. It helps you to better navigate the ever-expanding ocean of human knowledge and wisdom.

Who is Blinkist for?

  • If you don’t like reading books and have a very short attention span.
  • You’ve already read a book but want a summary of the best points.
  • If you want to know about a lot of different topics without going in depth.
  • If you want to start researching about a certain topic, Blinkist is a great start.

Blinkist Review: Pros and Cons

Many people ask, “is Blinkist a scam?”. Definitely No. People ask this question because they believe that reading in this manner is “cheating.” Is this part, I’d like to show you the advantages and disadvantages of Blinkist so you can predict what you’ll gain and lose with this app.

Pros of Using Blinkist

Perfect Addition to a busy lifestyle

If you’re a person with a full daily schedule, travelling around often or just want something at your fingertips wherever you are, Blinkist is the perfect addition to your lifestyle.

Highlighting helps a lot with remembering facts from summaries.

This is an underrated feature, as it can make a big difference in how much information you retain, but you also have to use it to get the benefits.

Can listen to on-the-go

No time to read? No problem. You can listen to the books just like an audiobook! The voice overs are easy to understand and listen to as well, which is always a bonus.

The audio experience on Blinkist is seamless.

You tap, it plays, you listen. Perfect for learning during long workouts, your commute to work, or while cooking or cleaning your house.

Good selection of titles

There are over 3000 titles currently on Blinkist, with a good selection of categories to choose from with more being added on a regular basis.

Cons of Using Blinkist

Humor and most emotion are stripped away almost completely from the book.

With Blinkist, you are missing out on the full value of having an entire book. One good thing about reading an entire book is that great writers know how to incorporate stories to help their readers retain concepts.

Some summaries are too short for the book they represent.

I’ve come across summaries that only had three or four blinks, but the actual book was really long. I suspect those will miss many important points.

Blinkist Review: Apps Like Blinkist

There are a bunch of similar book summary apps like Blinkist. Here’s are the ones I’ve identified:

  • Booknotes ($89.99/year with over 700 titles – inferior to Blinkist in my view)
  • Snapreads ($14.99/month – 3 times as expensive as Blinkist, and again not worth it IMO)
  • ReadingIQ (for kids 2 to 12)
  • getAbstract (contains over 20,000 books, and has similar pricing to Blinkist – worth checking out)
  • Instaread (similar or identical pricing to Blinkist, though with under 1,000 total books)
  • BookRags (focused specifically on educational resources like essays and lesson plans)
  • Quiddity (a free service, but with only ~150 titles – worth checking out)

The closest (and best) services to Blinkist from the list above are getAbstract and Instaread, so check them out if you’re looking for alternatives.
